Pterosaur - free vst synth

"Pterosaur is a 16 oscillator monosynth. The basic waveform of each oscillator is a sawtooth wave - but the "mod" control morphs it into a sort of saw-pulse hybrid."

Check it out here (scroll down on page), and download via this link.

But I recommend going here and download it, and try it out for yourself.

SabaTwoTiga - free vst lead synth from Chip Collection

The Chip Collection has released SabaTwoTiga, a little vst synth especially made for creating lead sounds.

"SabaTwoTiga is a free VST instrument for powerful electronic leads. The 4 voice selector knob allows you to quickly find a tone. 2-way switches modify the sound in an all or nothing fashion, eliminating time spent mousing for a new sound. It is a beefy and musical synth."

Features:

  • 4-Way Voice Selector (1, 2, 1+2, Ring Mod)
  • Mono Mode (glide)
  • Two Tuneable Sub Saws
  • Filter Control
  • Tempo Sync-LFO (Wobble Mode)

Download it for free here!

Nocturne - vst bass synth from MoDSP

MoDSP has released a vst bass synth called Nocturne, but unfortunately there's no sound demos of it yet. But anyway, here's some info:

Made for techno, electro, club, drum n' bass, grime and dubstep wobble bass. Simply a workhorse synth to quickly get nitrous, pulsing and alive bass tracks for the clubs or your neighbours.

Features:

Up to 32 voices.

2 oscillators: Each oscillator has 5 different waveforms.

3 voices true unison with stereo.

ADSR envelope generator.

Slide (monophonic mode with portamento).

Sync to host tempo or free LFO with 4 different waveforms and a unlimited waveform generator.

Save and load LFO wavetable file.

LFO modulated 3 x oversampled low pass filter with resonance control.

New Cromina String Machine VST

Strings are nice! Just ask musicians like Pet Shop Boys, or Jean Michel Jarre, and they will say "Strings are nice!". So this new VST is good news for all strings-lovers. The Cromina String Machine physically models classics like the Solina, to achieve that lush 60s and 70s string sound.

"No samples inside! After more than one year of development we are glad to present you this physical modeling recreation of the electronic strings sound of the 60s and 70s. Solina, Crumar and Logan where the names, which made it first possible for bands to bring a string orchestra on stage or into the studio. The lush sound of these electronic keyboards stamped many songs of this era. And then an electronic musician from France connected one of those keyboards to a phaser and created the most famous electronic string sound ever.

Two things are fundamental for this famous sound, which also made it impossible to construct a faithful copy with samples:

- the frequency divider circuit, that gave these keyboards polyphony  with the disadvantage of a very static sound

- the chorus unit to overcome this with a heavy modulation

The soundwise peculiarities of these can not be successful recreated by sampling. So we developed a plugin with the main emphasis on the reproduction of this typical influence on the sound. Though the drawback is a higher CPU load, it absolutely gives a much better reproduction of the original sound.

Although this plugin has it’s focus on the typical Solina sound (including a phaser and delay effect), it can produce a wide range of typical sounds by using the integrated equalizer, vibrato, envelope variations (including a piano envelope) and other tuning controls."

Some demo clips - Demo 1 - Demo 2

The Cromina String Machine will be released in the end of April, and will cost 39 euro.

Brown Wyzzard releases Filthpig VSTi synth

The design burns my eyes, but I guess it's the inside that counts. And here's what developer Brown Wyzzard has to say about what's inside their new soft synth Filthpig:

"Filthpig is a monstrous, six oscillator hybrid synthesizer with an extreme potential for tweakability. Geared towards drones, noise, sirens and circuit-bent style glitching, Filthpig employs two full, three oscillator synth sections -- one to produce sound and the other to act as a dedicated modulation source. Each section contains two tuning controls, a modulation depth knob, a waveform selector (five waveforms) and an amplitude envelope for each oscillator as well as a 3 x 3 modulation matrix that lets the output of any oscillator modulate any other oscillator (including itself). These modulation matrices also contain sync switches, and the modulator part of the synth also links oscillator output to the pitch values for the sound-producing section.

Although a monosynth at heart, Filthpig also has the ability to be switched into a three voice poly mode for added functionality, and also has two cascaded filters (hicut and then locut) for tone shaping. Whether you are an experimentalist or just like crazy sounds, Filthpig is sure to crawl out of the garbage can and into your heart (where it will undoubtedly lay eggs and die)."

Download a demo and some soundclips at Brown Wyzzards (somewhat annoying) website!

Feature List:

6 oscillators w/ 5 waveforms each

Two 3 osc. synth sections

Each osc. with its own channel strip (including ADSR, tuning, etc.)

Two 3 x 3 osc. sync / modulation matrices

Feedback modulation routing for unending modulation tweaks

3 voice poly mode

Cascading low and high pass filters on output

Price: $24.99

Extractor - free additive vst synth from miniSoftMusik

miniSoftMusik has released a freeware additive vst synth for Windows.

"Extractor is an additive synthesizer with 4 oscillators per 1-128 patrials. The waveforms can be extracted from every wavefile , if the wavefile is small(min 512 samples) the result is more like the original. It´s possible to save the result as a txt-file and to load it. This synth has 4 oscillators that can be uses simultaneous and Extractor features a morph function that remembers a wave table or phase distortion. Other functions are a multimode filter ,flexibly tone distortion , a step sequenzer for note , attack and decay envelope. As effect there is a hq chorus."

More about the Hang drum

A couple of posts ago, I wrote about the fantastic sound of the Hang drum. This handmade percussion instrument from Switzerland is, like so many other thing from Switzerland, pretty expensive and rare. So I guess I'm not gonna own one in the nearest future. But I got some tips about how to get the Hang sound without paying too much.

First - there´s an instrument for Kontakt made by Soniccouture with over 1000 samples from both the Hang mk1 and Hang mk2, and they sound really good. (picture above)  Check out the audio demos here!

Secondly- there's a VST instrument called "Hang" created by Dr Tikov (cool name) and Max Oro, a Hang player from Barcelona. Check it out here!

Here's a video of Max Oro playing with some clarinet dude:

But I still want to own a real Hang - there´s more to owning a cool drum than its sound. I'm pretty sure it works as a great icebreaker at parties etc. And it's a great way to upset your neighbours.

I Have Synth

Biography:

Been into synthesizers for 15 years, but never a technical geek. I'm a member of the band Velours Perfect, and have had electronic music as a hobby since I stopped playing with G.I Joe Figures. I buy and sell synths all the time, sometimes manically, and my favourite synth varies, right now it is the Alesis Ion. On this blog you can read about whatever comes out of my mind, mostly synthesizer-related stuff though. Bzzt!

I'm also on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and off course Ihavesynth.
