Eigenharp demo at Musikmesse

There's been a big buzz around the Eigenharp the last year or so. It is a very interesting instrument, which gives you expressive possibilities that you simply don't have in any other instrument. The inventors were long time electronic music fans experimenting with computers to make the music they craved for. They missed the live performance possibilities and decided to develop the best instrument for live electronic music. After 8 years designing, exeperimenting and prototyping the Eigenharp Alpha and Pico was released in late 2009.

The Eigenharp from Eigenlabs now comes in three models, the flagship Alpha (from £3995), the mid-level Tau (from £1899) and the small Pico (£399). At Musikmesse, Eigenlabs demoed the different Eigenharps, and it was interesting to see what can be made with it. But I guess it takes a lot of practice, and patience to be really good at it. Enjoy the demo we filmed at Musikmesse.

The new Clavia Nord Piano in action

Clavia presented their new Nord Piano at Musikmesse. 88 keys, weighted hammer action, and bright red as always with Clavia. It's also the most lightweight and portable stage piano on the market, at only 18kg (39,6 lbs).

Clavia has spent a lot of time sampling and perfecting the sounds, but you can get new soundsets from the Nord Piano Library when ever you feel like.

At Musikmesse, Clavia had a little mini-gig with some guy playing the Nord Piano and occasionally the Nord Wave. Too bad though, that all those pre-recorded "funk-guitars" and stuff disturbed the piano sound.

Moog Taurus 3 - The New "Fattest Synth Ever"

Moog showed their new Taurus 3 bass pedal at Musikmesse. The original Taurus has been called "the fattest synth ever", and the new version has both the original fatness and some new cool features.

The Taurus 3 has 100% analog audio signal path, and you could really feel that analog "oomph" when they demonstrated it. Especially cool was the new Arpeggiator function, which lets you arpeggiate with your feet! And who among us hasn't dreamt of that?

I really liked the modulation wheels, with their rugged rubber surface. Really easy to use with your feet.

Moog gave us a demo of the Taurus 3, its just too bad that the mighty bass frequencys didn't really get stuck on the film. You had to be there to feel it...

Elektron Octatrack - tweaking samples has never been easier

There's been one hell of a buzz around the Elektron Octatrack. I can understand that, since the Octatrack seems to make sampling and above all live performances easy as hell.

The Octatrack can bend, stretch, tweak and process your samples pretty much into anything you like, and they always stay in sync with the sequencer tempo. According to Elektron, the Octatrack really shines when it hangs around with its friends, the Elektron Monomachine (all things melodic) and the Elektron Machinedrum (fat beats). But as we could see at Musikmesse, the Octatrack is great for beats as well.

And with Compact Flash card compatibility, there's no risk of running out of space. Estimated release Q4 2010.

Elektron gave us a great demo of the Octatrack at Musikmesse 2010:

The Octatrack has:8 stereo tracks - 4 audio inputs - 4 audio outputs - Headphone output - USB 2.0 - Compact Flash card reader - Optical Fader - Improved Elektron sequencer - Real time pitch shift and time stretch - Real time sampling - 2 Effect blocks per track

A big thank you to the guys at Elektron for giving us this demo and chat!

Musikmesse: Exclusive Arturia Origin Keyboard demo

Arturia presented their new Origin Keyboard at this years Musikmesse. It's a sturdy looking keyboard, with the Origin synth firmly bolted onto it. It also has a cool ribbon controller, and aftertouch.

The Origin keyboard is shipping now, and can be yours for 2899 euro. And for two months, Arturia drops the price of the Origin desktop from 2490 euro to 1990 euro. So now is the time to buy it!

Arturia gave us a cool demo of the keyboard. We got to listen to a very Jarre-esque tune, very fitting for a french company as Arturia. It was backed by a live drummer, which spiced things up a bit.

Arturia has also released The ONE, a software bundle with 8 of their best virtual products (Analog Factory 2.5, Minimoog V, Moog Modular V, ARP2600V, CS-80V, Prophet V, Jupiter-8V, Brass 2). You can try all 8 with no functional limitations for 15 days, and then decide which ONE you'll keep. Price: 229 Euro.Check out The One from Arturia here

A big thanks to Fabien Brassely and the rest of the Arturia team at Musikmesse for organizing this Origin session for us. Read more about the Origin keyboard and Arturias other products like "The One" at  Arturia.com

Musikmesse: Radikal Technologies Accelerator - shake it to tweak it

Radikal Technologies Accelerator was another synth we looked forward to seeing at the Musikmesse. It was on display next to the Moog booth, and judging from its sound, i guess it could stand up to the Moogs, these masters of analog fatness.

The Accelerator is an 8-voice polyphonic synth, which is expandable with a DSP module that brings you extra voices and 8 part multitimbrality. it has all the goodies that you would expect from this kind of synth, but also one cool feature that makes it stand out.

It is clearly made for live performances, since it offers direct patch selection with dedicated patch selection buttons. But thats not the feature that makes it special - the really unique feature is its built in 3D sensor.

And what does the 3D sensor do? Well, it feels actual movements of the Accelerator and converts it into modulation data, used for controlling parameters like pitch, filter etc. So in practice, you could tweak an arpeggio by shaking the Accelerator. If you're strong enough. I guess hurling a synth into an audience has never been more sonically rewarding than now.

Check out the clip below to hear the effect of the 3D chip.

Musikmesse: Helmtronic Challenger Synthesizer

Hans-Joachim Helmstedt has designed this new retro style synthesizer called Helmtronic Challenger. It seems that the synthesizer is under development and this is the prototype. When they go public it will cost around € 2 000. The Helmtronic Challenger will be interesting to follow.

Musikmesse: Korg Monotron - cheap, small and angry

It was great to get a look at the Korg Monotron at Musikmesse 2010, even though Korgs booth was in the drums & percussion hall, probably the worst place to have a hangover in the universe.

I was excited about the Monotron even before I went to the show, and when I saw it, I was very impressed. It sounded better than I had thought it would, it seems that the Youtube clips and MP3 demos you can find on the Internet now just don't do it justice. It's not a thing you can use for warm, sensual analog sounds though. This is  one angry, angry little synth.

And the Korg Monotron is SMALL, way smaller than I expected. The dimensions 120 mm (W) x 72 mm (D) x 28 mm (H) and 95 grams weight without batteries, makes this a little companion that can follow you everywhere.

And totally OK build quality, with pretty good knob-feel to it, even though the small ribbon keyboard makes it a bit hard to play (obviously).

But the best thing - the price! Only 70 euros! So, when the Monotron is being released in June, I'm definitely getting one. Considering that you get the MS-10/20 filter from the Legacy Collection, and an Audio In port, it's pretty much a done deal for me.

Since Korg showed it in the drum hall at the Musikmesse, we didn't get any clips where you could hear the Monotron over the thousands of drumsets being abused there, but below is a Youtube clip and two MP3 demos from Korgs website.

Musikmesse: Check out the Reactable

The Reactable is a cool touchscreen table where you place cubes and other stuff that creates music/sounds. Sound and music depend on where you put the shapes and how you turn them. I have blogged about the Reactable in previous posts. At Musikmesse I got the chance to get a closer look. I was very positive before but now I'm starting to hesitate. It's still very cool but will it be useful? It's not for the home studio musician. And when should you use it, for live effect? For a large audience you need to film/project it anyway so you might just aswell do a laser harp instead :-) . Or am I missing the point completely? Let me know what you think about the Reactable.

Musikmesse: Rhizome - the most badass groove machine ever

One of the absolute highlights of this Musikmesse was the Rhizome from Feeltune. When we were speaking to different people at the Messe, asking what they were most impressed by, they all pretty much agreed that Rhizome, this stylish groove machine from French company Feeltune was the must-see of the year. And it was stylish alright, black and white, and with all those awesome displays it looked like the kind of gear a Star Wars stormtrooper would prefer.

What's inside?

But it's not all looks, it packs some serious power. The Rhizome is an all-in-one workstation with sampler, sequencer, EQ, mixing desk etc. The big thing about this machine is that you can cram pretty much as many VST plugins into it as you want, since it comes with a hard drive and a Windows XPE operating system. At delivery, the Rhizome contains about 40 plugins (synths, effects, drum machines etc... MiniMonsta was mentioned...).

What makes the Rhizome stand out is the layout of the knobs, pads, buttons and displays. It seems to give you a great overview when working with it, and all sampling and sequencing can be made in real time. No need to stop any great grooves, as you can see in the demonstration that Nicolas Piau from Feeltune made. He made a track from scratch in a couple of minutes, and really got into it. Great guy by the way!

Nicolas Piau also told us a bit about the Rhizome:

So far, the Rhizome is an almost complete prototype, and its due for release in the third quarter of 2010. Feeltune's website hasn't got that much info yet, but I guess they'll update it. But we compiled the info from their broschure below!

Here at Ihavesynth, we'll keep an eye on this beautiful machine.

Check Feeltune's site here!

Musikmesse: Eigenharp Pico Demo

Here is a demo of the Eigenharp Pico. The smallest of the three Eigenharps. It's so small you can even make a demo sitting in your airplane seat. In the clip we get a smooth jazz sax improvisation by Gbevin. It seems like a fun toy more than something that turns you into a hot seductive jazz musician...

I recorded this smooth jazz sax song on my train ride to the Frankfurt Musikmesse yesterday. Besides the music, this video also demonstrates the awesome portability of the Pico. You can make music anywhere, just take your laptop out on the train, on the plane, in a restaurant, ... and start playing music with headphones!I found the chords and melodic theme a few days ago but the rest of this recording is pure improvisation. The sax sound comes for the amazing free Silverwood v2 ensemble for Reaktor, I used some tube-warming and saturation through an inline audio unit effect to get that warm and round feel.

Musikmesse: Korg unveils new Electribes

The popular Korg Electribe gets two updates. Korg announced this yesterday at Musikmesse in Frankfurt. They are adding support for massive SD data storage and new presets and patterns.

Musikmesse: Roland introduces the GAIA SH-101 Synth

This is the most interesting release so far. Atleast I think so. The Roland GAIA SH-101 looks really cool. I'll definately take a closer look when I go down to Frankfurt.

PRESS RELEASE: With its massive sound, hands on ease-of-play, and affordable price, Roland's GAIA SH-01 is high-performance value with old-school charm. Borrowing the name from the goddess of earth in Greek mythology, GAIA goes back to the origins of synthesis by using today's most advanced technology. The triple-stacked engine puts potent virtual analogue synthesis under your fingertips, yet the control panel is so fun, friendly, and inviting, even first-timers can create great sounds. The signal flow is simple to grasp, with logically arranged knobs, sliders, and buttons.

Get your teeth into the new triple-stacked virtual analogue engine, comprising three complete synths for incredibly thick, powerful sound. Unleash the three oscillators that drive a trio of multimode, resonant filters, multi-shape LFOs, and amplifiers, plus nine envelope generators, and a complete multi-effects system. It's like having three synthesizers in one! With 64 polyphonic voices onboard, GAIA makes it possible to play massive sounds without experiencing note drop-out.

From the silkiest reverb to the grittiest growl, GAIA's instantly selectable multi-effects will catapult your sounds into another spatial dimension. You can layer up to five simultaneous effects for dozens of variations. The onboard effects include reverb, distortion, fuzz, bit crash, flanger, phaser, pitch shifter, low boost, and delay with panning and tempo sync. Dedicated control knobs are provided for tweaking the effects in real time.

The front panel puts every control directly under your fingertips. There are no hidden menus, no nonsense. Just play and move the knobs and sliders, or wave your hands over the invisible D Beam for dramatic effects. The logically designed front panel shows the signal path from left to right. It helps beginners understand synthesis, while experienced players will love the instant gratification of hands-on control during performance.

Hold a note or chord and let the arpeggiator create musical magic automatically for you. The tempo can be set via cursor or tap tempo. In addition, the onboard Phrase Recorder lets you record what you play on the keyboard as well as the movements of the knobs and sliders. The controller data can also be played back independently to complement the notes you play in real time.

Connect directly to a computer (Mac or PC) with one simple USB cable, and stream audio directly to the software of your choice. GAIA's USB port can also be used to transmit and receive MIDI data, and to store your patches and phrases (recorded with the Phrase Recorder) to a USB memory stick. And for integrating with other external devices, the EXT input lets you connect external audio sources such as an MP3-player to play along with your favourite songs or backing tracks. Manipulate the incoming audio with three Centre Cancel modes, which let you minimise pre-recorded vocals, guitars, or bass.

At less than 10 pounds, GAIA is lightweight, compact, and great for musicians on the go. The 37-note keyboard is full size, so performers can play naturally and comfortably. The synth can be powered via AC or batteries for the ultimate in portable convenience. A battery-life indicator ensures that you won't lose power unexpectedly. When used in conjunction with a battery-powered amp such as Roland's CUBE Street, MOBILE CUBE, BA-330 or KC-110, GAIA can be played and heard anywhere.

Hands-on control and fat sound make this little powerhouse a joy for music students, songwriters, session players, and live performers of all styles and skill levels.

I Have Synth

Biography:

Been into synthesizers for 15 years, but never a technical geek. I'm a member of the band Velours Perfect, and have had electronic music as a hobby since I stopped playing with G.I Joe Figures. I buy and sell synths all the time, sometimes manically, and my favourite synth varies, right now it is the Alesis Ion. On this blog you can read about whatever comes out of my mind, mostly synthesizer-related stuff though. Bzzt!

I'm also on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and off course Ihavesynth.
