Tenori-on-style editing with Aurora Sound Studio for iPad/iPhone

Aurora Sound Studio is a new sequencing app for iPad/iPhone which looks a bit like the Yamaha Tenori-on interface. Perfect for those who hate playing out of tune, since you can choose a musical scale, and every note will sound just right. A bit like cheating, some will probably say, but others will probably not give a damn and have fun with it instead.

"Aurora is our pattern based musical sequencing software. By simply choosing a musical scale every note you play is in perfect tune, leaving you to make your own great sounding music.

If you are a more accomplished musician you simply switch Aurora to advanced mode and you get full control over the built in instruments and effects, as well as many advanced modes such as the Atomizer and XY Mode which allows you to manipulate sound in real-time. You can create your own instrument from recordings made using the built in microphone. Just think, a full drum kit of you beatboxing into the microphone!

Aurora allows a mixture of pattern based recording and live performance. You can piece together complete compositions or simply improvise a performance. All of which can be captured to a file, for use as a ringtones, or to share with others.

An integrated mixer, combined with the ability to add audio effects and layer automation means that you achieve a sophisticated sound in a fun and user friendly way."

Artikulator iPad App - Finger Paint Sounds

This iPad app called Artikulator is not yet released but this clip is really interesting. The app lets you create music visually . Just slide your fingers on the touch-screen and shape the sound you want. Curve a line upwards and it will create a higher pitch. If you make a line big the sound will be louder.

Developers Mike Rotondo and Luke Iannini constructed the app in about 24 hours during a Music Hackday, a series of events that combines art and technology with fascinating results. They hope to release their creation in the App Store soon, and they won’t be charging for the initial version. We also saw the app running on an iPhone, for those of you who don’t have iPads. And yes, they’re aware this demo sounds like “dying cats”; more timbres and sounds will be available. We think this interface is a wonderful way to teach and learn about music and to express creative urges without getting mired down in the technicalities of making and producing music. What’s your take on it: Could you see yourself playing with an “instrument” such as this one?

TOPLAPapp - a stranger kind of synth interface

This looks interesting. Not the most practical interface for an iPad synth, probably the LEAST practical, but it's always nice to see people push the boundaries for how synths should look.

"TOPLAPapp is a sonic puzzle based around a virtual machine for sound synthesis. This machine only accepts a few valid instructions, and you control it by placing each command letter within a grid, along with setting some associated parameter sliders. The machine runs through the grid, following the instructions to create the output sounds, which are usually of a somewhat noisy character, hopefully interestingly so. The historical antecedents include instruction synthesis as pionneered at the Institute of Sonology in the 1970s, and the live coding movement, of modifying a running program as it acts. This app is intended for those interested in more experimental sound art, and is in no way a traditional diatonic melody generator. Don't download this unless you are open to stranger computer music sounds."

Control Spectrasonics Omnisphere with your Iphone

A new interesting app for all musicians who love their Iphones, or for musicians who love their Iphone, and are too lazy to walk across the studio to change Omnisphere patches!

"Omni Live is an application designed to turn an iPhone (or iPod Touch) into a simple, wireless remote control of Omnisphere’s “Live Mode” page via the touch-screen interface on the small, portable devices. Since Omnisphere’s Live Mode already allows multiple sound selection, the iPhone’s multi-touch display makes a useful control surface - especially on the stage.

Having remote control of the Live Mode page allows a player to sit remotely from their computer, at their MIDI’ed piano, or across the room at a MIDI controller and instantly choose a patch or combination of patches in the Live Mode page simply by touching the patch names on the iPhone display. The patch names are sent from Omnisphere wirelessly back to the iPhone.

Setup is very simple, when Omnisphere is running on the computer and the iPhone is connected to the same wireless network, launching the “Omni Live” App on the iPhone will find the host computer and allow wireless control of sound selection in Omnisphere’s Live Mode page. When sounds are selected in Omnisphere, the iPhone automatically gets updated wirelessly."

The first iPad music apps coming up

This is a pre release screenshot of the White Noise Audio "bleep!BOX". It's been two weeks since Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad. I've always said it will be really interesting to see what musical apps will be like for it. Now we can see the first ones coming up. It's remakes of apps made for the iPhone. Its a start and it will get better in time.

This is what White Noise Audio says about their new app:

"The bigger interface will allow for a better 'heads up' display of the full tune you are working on, as well as global access to things like the mute buttons," says developer David Wallin. "Navigation will also be a lot easier. After the first release, I will work on adding some additional features (aside from just enhanced UIs)."

Apple unveils iPad

So its finally here, the Apple iPad. Steve Jobs presented it yesterday at a press conference. The hype was incredible and twitter struggled with over capacity when all the apple nerds of the world followed the presentation (iTunes link).

It looks just like everyone expected and I think it looks very interesting. I've seen a lot of comments from people feeling a bit disapointed, the hype is huge. Though to be fair, what do people expect? Remember that this device will be filled with biilions of cool apps, that is what will make it rock or fail. The price will be between $500 and $830 depending on version.

Now I look forward to the music apps being produced, the potential here is great. The apps will be way cooler and more usefull in this iPhone on steroids - the iPad.

Here is the official apple iPad video

Big questions still to be answered. Will it float and will it blend?

I Have Synth

Biography:

Been into synthesizers for 15 years, but never a technical geek. I'm a member of the band Velours Perfect, and have had electronic music as a hobby since I stopped playing with G.I Joe Figures. I buy and sell synths all the time, sometimes manically, and my favourite synth varies, right now it is the Alesis Ion. On this blog you can read about whatever comes out of my mind, mostly synthesizer-related stuff though. Bzzt!

I'm also on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and off course Ihavesynth.
