Depeche Mode behind the scenes video

Serching through youtube I came across these vids that I hadn't seen before. Its a behind the scenes video showing the Depeche Mode gang in LA when they prepare for the MTV Video Awards. Jamming in the limo, playing cricket on the parking lot, having some beers and checking out the Fat Boys.

Knock out interviews with John Foxx, Warren Cann and David Gahan

I gathered som great old interviews in this post. All of them are from swedish TV, which has a long history of being smug, annoying and notoriously lousy on researching before interviews..

One of this blogs followers, Steven Eisler, sent me this clip. It's just fantastic, an hillarious interview with John Foxx in swedish TV back in the 70's.  He seems extremely frustrated and annoyed right from the start of the interview. When you watch it you understad that he must have been through hell in the preparations and set up before they kicked things off...

Short interview with John discussing Eno, punk and being a "Human Being". The ending is hillarious, with the hosts of the show picking up instruments and serenading John with "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow"

The blond guy cutting John off is saying: "I think we will need to cut this off and actually listen to some music instead"... LoooooooL :-)

Lets check out swedish television in the 80's as well. This is an interview with Warren Cann from the popular show "Måndagsbörsen". The fact that cities are called different names in different languages can be confusing. Especially if you don't know what a city is called in your mother tounge.

Vienna, Venice, Wien, Wurzburg, Slough. Whats the difference...

This clip is also from "Måndagsbörsen" in 82. David Gahan interview and Depeche Mode performs See You. Hmm, the interviewer talks about synthesizers vs. "real" instruments. Annoying but common at the time I guess...

First you'll see a great interview with David "Dave" Gahan. Then Depeche Mode will perform See You, all @ Måndagsbörsen 1982. This television musicshow was broadcast in Sweden from 1979-1984.

Note: You can clearly see how the cameraman keeps zooming in on Andrew Fletchers hands to REALLY show that he is fake-playing his Moog Source. Not fair! They should have zoomed in on Martin Gore or Alan Wilder instead, and the nice PPG Wave 2.

Thank you Steven Eisler. Check out his band Jetstream Soldier on Myspace

Depeche Mode at Albert Hall - Alan Wilder returns

Depeche Mode gave a charity concert at Royal Albert Hall last night. Apparantley Alan Wilder made a chock return to the band he left 15 years ago. Its not a permanent come back though as so many Depeche Mode fans probably wishes. He played the piano for - Somebody - with Martin Gore in what seems to be a special occasion kind of thing. I gathered some clips from the concert that I found on youtube. Not very good quality unfortunately. But well worth a look.

Hopefully this was just a teaser for a future collaboration. I would love to hear a new Depeche Mode record with that special Alan Wilder touch. And why wouldn't they do it? I mean, a new Depeche record with Alan Wilder would probably sell by the gazillion.

A question of time

Never let me down again

17.000 dollar Depeche Mode watches

The swiss watch brand Hublot has released 12 unique, ultra-expensive Depeche Mode watches, each with an album cover pictured on it. They look pretty (or damn) good, but sadly the starting bid for each watch is around 17.000 dollars, so even if I sold everything I own (including my Suzuki Swift!!!) I probably couldn't afford one.

The profits go directly to the Teenage Cancer Trust, so if you have the bucks, go spend them.

Check it out here!

Depeche Mode fan film in the making

Depeche Modes long career is to be crowned with a fan film - "The Posters Came From The Walls". Its a collection of interviews of Depeche Mode fans from all over the world, speaking about their devotion to Depeche Mode. British filmmakers Nick Abrahams and Jeremy Deller have constructed the footage and there are supposed to be quite a few surprise apperances. NIN:s Trent Reznor being one of them.

This is a question and answer session with the filmmakers speaking about the film at the Clapham Picturehouse in Dec 2009.

"The Posters Came From The Walls" is set to be released later this year.

Here's two clips from the documentary. Looks interesting to say the least :-)

Tickets go on sale from 9am this Friday (december 18), so be sure to check out the Gigwise.com Gig Tickets section for details.

Andy Fletcher faking it

Most people agree that Andrew Fletcher in Depeche Mode probably, or most definitely fakes playing at live shows. I saw Depeche live a couple of years ago, and spent one half of the show staring at Andy´s hands, and the other half being annoyed at the drummer who rock-drummed all of their songs to hell. And while the drummer was most definitely playing live, Andrew wasn't.

But I don't think it's wrong to fake it. In fact, I think synth music should be performed entirely by sequencers and/or robots. But I know that many people think it's not "real" live music if it's not performed by a half/completely drunk/stoned human being.

The cameraman in the clip below (Swedish TV 1982) must be one of those people, because he/she really gives Andrew a hard time by zooming in on his hands throughout the song. It's not fair, really! Alan Wilder, who is playing for real, looks like the "good guy". But I'd rather be a loyal faker, than a quitter.

New video, Depeche Mode - Hole to feed

Interesting (and creepy) video for Depeche Modes "Hole to feed", directed by Eric Wareheim.

Jarre on LSD

I'd like to think that this is what Jarre sees when he's on LSD (I'm not saying that he is)

Synth blog tip#1: Mention Jean Michel Jarre in a post and you'll get more views. Sad but true.

Ping Pong with Depeche Mode

For all of you who have questioned Andrew Fletcher's role in Depeche Mode. He is their ping pong player!

Depeche Mode in the studio

It's fun to see what synths they use. I see some Korg MS's, a Clavia Nord of some kind, what more?

Depeche Mode - Television Set

News to me, maybe not for you, but anyway - I thought I had heard everything by Depeche Mode, but apparently they used to play a song written by a friend of Vince Clarke at live sets in 1981. They never recorded it because of copyright issues though. Too bad, it's way better than....What's your name?

Faking it

One thing that annoys me is when people expect electronic artists to really play live. Electronic music should be faked, or 95% fake at least. It’s ok to play some sounds live I guess. Playing too much live can ruin the feeling of electronic music. Take for example Depeche Mode, who have a rocknroll drummer banging away the hardest he can on his drum set, when there instead should be a single vintage drum machine on a piedestal in the middle of the stage. Screw human drummers, they mess things up.

I Have Synth

Biography:

Been into synthesizers for 15 years, but never a technical geek. I'm a member of the band Velours Perfect, and have had electronic music as a hobby since I stopped playing with G.I Joe Figures. I buy and sell synths all the time, sometimes manically, and my favourite synth varies, right now it is the Alesis Ion. On this blog you can read about whatever comes out of my mind, mostly synthesizer-related stuff though. Bzzt! Oh...my name is Ulf Dufwenberg. It's Swedish.

I'm also on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and off course Ihavesynth.
